Is a bigger drop better after lots of linkbuilding before getting higher rankings?

I have learned over time doing seo that when I add quality high pr links my top 3 postions drop to somehwre like page 8.
I always worry for about 6 weeks I will never return and I should have been happy with what I was getting.
